Newborn care specialist vs. postpartum doula

There's a lot of overlap in these two roles

Both NCSs and postpartum  doulas are experts in baby care.  Newborn care specialists focus on caring for the baby, while postpartum doulas support the whole family.

Each provider has their own approach-- here's how I do things.

In my role as an NCS, I’m actively caring for the baby—feeding, soothing, diapering—so parents can rest or work.

As a daytime postpartum doula, I spend the session with the parents. It’s more like a consultation: I provide education, emotional support, and practical guidance.

I guide them as they care for their baby. We bathe the baby together, and I coach and encourage them as they practice using the baby carrier, bottle feeding, infant massage, and soothing techniques.

To sum it up, as an NCS, I’m taking care of the baby. As a doula, I’m there to coach the parents.
